The Saxophone
The Saxophone is an instrument made from brass with a metal, plastic or hard rubber mouthpiece. A single reed, often make of bamboo or a form of plastic, is attached to the mouthpiece by a piece of metal called a ligature. As the sound is created by blowing 'wind' into the instrument, causing the reed to vibrate, the saxophone is classed as a member of the woodwind family. The most popular saxophones are the soprano, alto, tenor and baritone and are all played by blowing into the mouthpiece while pressing keys which cover or lift pads from a sound hole. The Saxophone is often associated with Jazz music, but can be used in a wide variety of genres creating beautiful melodies and solos.
Do I need my own Saxophone?
Having your own Saxophone is a big advantage because it means you can practice between lessons creating better results. As with any instrument, it is important to try before you buy. Even though you might not be able to play anything yet, holding the instrument in your hands can tell you a lot about the quality of the instrument. You can always ask your teacher for help with choosing your next instrument. If you are unsure if you want to buy a saxophone yet, some stores will rent instruments for a small fee.
Why learn to play the Saxophone
Ask any musician and they'd probably want to jam on the saxophone. Jazz guitarists even copy saxophone melodies and some of the most haunting and famous solos are played on the saxophone. If the saxophone isn't your thing, don't worry! MusicTeachers offers music lessons in various instruments.
