About Caroline S.
Caroline is a well-qualified and experienced piano and theory teacher. She holds a BA in music, an M Mus in Music Analysis and an MA in Music Therapy; also both the ABRSM and Trinity performance diplomas and the Cert PTC in piano pedagogy. Caroline studies piano with Claudia Schurr and Heli Ignatius-Fleet and has also had occasional lessons with Graham Fitch, Philip Fowke and Jeremy Young. She teaches from her home in Greenwich on a 5 foot 7" Schimmel baby grand and a Yamaha CLP745 Clavinova.
Caroline specialises in teaching adults (from beginners to advanced), and also works with chldren of secondary school age. Her pupils have a 100% success rate in exams up to ABRSM Grade 8, with most achieving merit or distinction. She focuses on technique and musical detail right from the beginning and ensures that her students develop good habits and practise regularly.
Caroline is also a qualified music therapist and feels that this impacts on her teaching. She treats each pupil as an individual, preparing personal learning plans which take into account ambitions, musical tastes, and life circumstances.
Caroline considers it important that all pupils gain structural understanding of the music they are playing and for this reason she includes some theory tuition as an integral part of all piano lessons. She also offers extra coaching for pupils wishing to take Grade 5 or other theory exams.
She is a Professional Member of the European Piano Teachers Association (EPTA) and regularly attends EPTA and ABRSM events and study days; also the Chethams Summer School. As well as piano, Caroline also plays French Horn in orchestras and chamber groups.
