About Zoe F.

Zoe Felton is an experienced and friendly teacher who has been teaching since 2007. She teaches both privately and in schools, and age is no issue. Taking a pupil focussed approach, lessons are tailored to the needs and wants of pupils whether that be exam preparation or playing for fun, but always with the aim of improving both skills and understanding, and getting the best out of the player. A big believer in a general music education, lessons will involve understanding the instrument and the background to the music. They will also involve theory, whether that be formally or informally. They can also involve supporting pupils in other musical activities such as working on band music/developing skills involved in playing in a band, being part of the ensemble performance for GCSE and supplementing the learning of GCSE music. Genres covered range from classical and jazz to popular music and musical theatre.

First lessons will always include a time getting to know each other - musical background, likes/dislikes etc. They will also usually include what the pupil wants out of the lessons if that hasn't already been discussed. If a beginner, they will then move onto a time of getting to know the instrument. If more experienced, they will be asked to play something of their choice to allow Zoe to assess.

Graduating from Keele University specialising in composition, Zoe has since pursued that with pieces ranging from small ensemble to full orchestra. Some of her music can be found on soundcloud, and sheet music is available to buy on sheetmusicplus.com or scoreexchange.com.

Her musical journey started at the age of 5 with recorder, followed by organ a couple of years later. Moving to middle school, she had the opportunity to learn a brass instrument - thankfully everyone around her recognised her talent and passion at this stage as she didn't! Spending 4 years playing tenor horn, and being part of City of Sheffield Junior Brass Band, Zoe then tried clarinet and decided that was what she wanted to concentrate on. Studying clarinet at Keele under Nick Cox, Zoe went on to develop a love for the saxophone which she subsequently studied as an adult under Alistair Parnell. She can now be found playing lead alto in Loughborough Concert Band, where she also takes on a mentoring role with less experienced players, as well as joining in with a local sax quintet.

Zoe Felton has a wide knowledge or musical style. She has indepth knowledge of musical theory and practice (technique). She has a thorough understanding of teaching theory and had the ability to apply this to the individual across a range of ages.

I have known Zoe for about 20 years personally and she has taught my daughter clarinet for about 4 years. Zoe is enthusiastic and encouraging and has been flexible throughout all the covid restrictions. My daughter is now working towards grade 7 - keen and enjoying her instrument.
