About Max B. G.
Max has over 20 years experience as a music teacher, working in schools, music centres and teaching privately, and covering an age range of pupils from 6 to 60!
After studying music at Birmingham University, specialising in performance, and graduating with a B.Mus 2:1, Max has gone on to lead a full and active career as teacher and performer, with the latter taking in work for the Royal Shakespeare Company and West End theatres, recordings for composers and studios, and gigs at national music festivals and international tours.
As a music teacher Max is very enthusiastic: keen to help pupils achieve their goals on their instrument, delighted to be able to share his love of music with them and committed to helping them successfully overcome any challenges and hurdles they may encounter along the way.
Teaching in Flute, Recorder and Folk Whistle
Max teaches Flute from beginners to advanced students, from age 7 upwards, and covers all genres and styles, from Classical Grade material, to beginner Jazz, and from Folk traditions from the British Isles and across the world to Film and Pop music.
Regardless of the style of music that’s focussed on, Max will ensure that throughout the lessons the pupil gains a really secure Flute technique and accompanying understanding of music and musicianship, alongside and as part of an enjoyable journey discovering, learning and mastering new pieces and skills.
Max teaches Folk Whistle (aka Tin whistle and Low Whistle) and Folk and Bamboo Flute to all ages and standards.
Coming from a solid background of learning and playing Folk music in both professional and traditional settings Max has a range of experience to call upon in guiding a learner through their chosen repertoire, whilst also providing them with a good instrumental technique, and ways to strengthen and maintain it, at the same time.
Max also plays and performs on (and continues to himself study) many other Woodwind instruments from across the globe including Chinese Flutes, a variety of Bagpipes, Armenian Duduk, Macedonian Kaval, Panpipes from South America and Romania, and numerous other Folk Flutes. He is happy to give guidance and lessons on these if requested and also to work them, and pieces from their tradition, into lessons on the Flute, Whistle or Recorder where appropriate.
Max teaches beginner to intermediate standard on the Recorder from age 7 onwards.
From Graded material to Jazz standards Max covers these all on the Recorder and can take a pupil from beginner to fully fledged, developing strong playing technique and musicianship along the way.
Max can teach a range and combination of musical genres to suit the taste and aspirations of any learner including classical music and graded exam material, folk music from the UK, Ireland, Europe and the Far East, jazz standards and the beginning stages of improvisation, and famous film and pop music arrangements.
A pupil can expect the first lesson to be relaxed with a chance for a good chat as Max gets to know them, their tastes in Music, what they want to achieve on their instrument and what they may already know about it. There will also be a chance for them to ask questions of Max on anything they want to know about the instrument, and hear and see Max demonstrate how it works and play some classic pieces on it, including ones that they’ll likely learn.
The lesson will finish off with a definite plan being put in place for what happens next, including what to practise, how to start going about it and important things to remember.
Max can also give good advice both before and during the first lesson on what materials need to be bought for the lessons going forward.
This can also include advise on instrument purchase if the pupil doesn’t already have one.
