About Joanna L.
ONLINE AND FACE TO FACE IN SOMERSET
Joanna is a creative, focused and dedicated piano and piano accordion teacher and performer, with over 25 years of experience with children and adults of all ages and abilities. Joanna has worked as a freelance tutor in her own studio, in high profile school music departments, Music Services, and at Bath University.
Teaching Philosophy
Joanna aims to provide a relaxed and friendly learning environment, to motivate and support your progress. As well as ensuring that you enjoy your lessons, her focus is on encouraging self-expression and personal development through music making, whatever your ability level. Joanna enjoys working creatively with individually tailored programmes of study, and is also experienced in coaching for Grade Exams if this approach suits you best. Joanna’s students are consistently successful when they choose to take exams and are well prepared if they want to take up opportunities to play to an audience.
Genre/Style
Joanna is equally at home helping you explore western classical, international folk or contemporary styles. She will work with you to identify the range of music which inspires in you the most passion and drive to develop your own musicality and command of the instrument.
Your First Lesson
This is a chance to discuss what you are currently hoping to gain from your lessons, perhaps bring a piece or tune that you are comfortable playing already, and/or try out a few new things. Joanna will gather plenty of information to help her design an individual learning plan specifically for you, and send you away with some fun things to practice at home!
Beginners Welcome!
The focus from the start will be on good technique – learning the best ways of producing a musically pleasing sound whatever you play, however simple. This will include getting really familiar and comfortable with your instrument and it's possiblities. Depending on your interests Joanna will help you build up a ‘toolkit’ of skills one step at a time, using a variety of approaches which can include learning by imitation, playing by ear, support to create your own simple melodies, beginning to read standard notation and starting to experiment with chords and ‘noodling’.
From a musical family background, Joanna studied piano and composition at Bath Spa University, graduating with a BA...
