About James Day
James has been playing and writing and teaching music for over 10 years now and has a vast amount of experience in performing, music theory and music production . James plays both the Trumpet and Trombone and has played in a number of large big bands to small Jazz/Funk ensemble groups.
James started playing the Trumpet from the age of 14 at school with music lessons and Band practices both in Jazz, brass bands and orchestra. During this time James took his music grades progressing to grade 8 on Trumpet when he was 17. As James was already playing trumpet at the time he found it an easy progression onto the trombone and had lessons and again took his grades up to grade 5 for on the Trombone.
After school James studied at the London Centre for Contemporary music in London obtaining a 2:1 BMUS in Music Performance and Production. During his time at college James played with some greats including Sid Gauld, Dave O'Higgins and Pee Wee Elis and Fred Wesley part of James Browns JBs Funk group. James has also played with NYJO (National Youth Jazz Orchestra) and GYJO (Gloucestershire Youth Jazz Orchestra) and a number of other small jazz ensembles throughout his current career. Jazz and funk/reggae music are his passion to play.
Before attending your first lesson with James you will need to make sure you have your own instrument if not I can look at hiring you one for a small additional fee. In addition please have a notepad/Manuscript/pencil to make notes and annotations where necessary and also water to keep your self hydrated during your lesson.
Your First Lesson
In your first lesson with James you will discuss what you wish to achieve during your time together, how much you have played previously, your style of playing and what genre(s) of music you feel comfortable playing.
In a typical lesson depending on experience and ability James would like to focus on firstly teaching you some technical skills etc keys/scales/modes/breaching techniques which we can then use on a piece of music you enjoy or are looking to master so they can put your learning into practice. Tone and quality are also very important as a brass player as well as finding your own style of playing which I can help you develop through breathing techniques and your embouchure. If there is a specific technique or area you would like to cover please let James know and he can home in on this. James can teach a wide variety of genres of music from Classical, funk and jazz through to pop. James does offer teaching towards music grades (1-8) through MTB, ABRSM other music boards.
There is no pressure during any lesson and James encourages students not to feel anxious/pressured if they do something wrong as we all learn and improve by our mistakes. James tries to make lessons fun and enjoyable by encouraging students to play their favourite tunes or tunes they wish to learn and master. James would recommend to students that they practice at least 2-3 times a week in their own time, in order to get the most out of your lessons with him.
James is able to teach trumpet to grade 8+ and trombone to around a grade 5 level due to this being his secondary instrument.
James is available for lessons during evenings or weekends online or in person from 17:00-22:00 in the evenings and weekends 8:00-21:00. I am available to teach 30 mins -1 hour lessons.
