After over a decade away from music, I decided in summer 2023 to re-start learning the alto sax as a way to have some hobbies and having something outside of work that made me focus. I knew I needed a teacher who had a solid foundation and could be patient with my lack of confidence, easily distracted and chatterbox style. I also have an intense day job so I needed a teacher who could be flexible and provide evening lessons. I’m so glad to have found Ian!! He is really good at helping me pick apart music and teaches me theory in addition to playing. I passed my grade 1 exam in late 2023 and I’m looking forward to continuing my learning. This is more than music lessons for me, it’s learning how to put myself out there, combatting perfectionism and doing something which makes me feel uncomfortable/ not confident. Ian is very encouraging and always reminds me it’s okay to make mistakes, that’s what learning means and one should carry on. As a bonus, the family has a gorgeous cat which tolerates strokes!

Ian is a great teacher. He is friendly, patient and very good at meeting the student where they are at. I can highly recommend learning with him!

Despite him only being a school-aged tutor at the time, Ian and my son got on really well from day 1. He was firm but fair and guided my son through many years of weekly tuition. Given the chance, I would go down the same route again.
