Hugh has the ability to make learning enjoyable, which for me, is the most important part of learning a new instrument. He's obviously very knowledgeable about the trumpet and talented at playing and doesn't mind passing this on. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend his lessons, enjoy!

Fabulous experience - a great teacher. Experienced, friendly, knowledgable, fun, and very positive. I’m a beginner bass trombonist and I have learned so much in a very short time. Many of the things we have been working on are a complete surprise to me! Hugh’s teaching also complements my playing in a regular band. Don’t hesitate to book lessons. Very highly recommended. We have only had our first trial session for my 8 year old. Hugh appears to understand and be able to adapt quickly to what his students need. My son really enjoyed his lesson and has voluntarily picked up his trumpet each day since to practice holding and blowing his first few notes. Thanks Hugh, really looking forward to our first block of lessons!

An excellent teacher. Hugh is able to explain both theory and practice in a way that I, as a complete beginner, can understand. He progresses the lessons at the right pace for me as an individual, while ensuring I see week on week improvement. Importantly, he is able to understand my musically inarticulate questions to help me to develop. I understand most of his students are much more advanced than I am and yet he is very patient and encouraging which aids my commitment to progress.

Hugh picks up on different threads of a concept or obstacle and thinks of great exercises to help, which makes for a thorough and unique lesson each time. I am already a brass teacher and his playing and teaching advice comes as guidance I really appreciate within my music career. Thanks, Hugh!

Hugh is a brilliant teacher, his lessons have made an enormous difference to my flugel playing. Whenever I'm struggling with a particular aspect of the instrument or music, he always identifies what's going on, helps me to sort it out and sets exercises to improve it. Hugh is a fantastic teacher. I bought a block of ten trumpet lessons for my wife, she is in her fifties, no previous experience of playing any instrument or reading music & she is loving the challenge. She was a little dubious that she would be able to learn but she tells me that Hugh is extremely patient, encouraging, knowledgeable & has a joyful enthusiasm for music which is proving contagious. After only a few weeks Racheal is already playing recognizable tunes & is beginning to be able to sight read music. I'm pleased that she has decided to continue & has booked more lessons with Hugh. Having seen Racheal's progress from lesson 1 to Lesson 10, I can most definitely recommend Hugh for students of any age.

I've been having lessons with Hugh for a few months now.His patience and skill as a teacher has brought my playing on in leaps and bounds. He knows what to focus on and how to develop you as a player by breaking things down to it's simplest format. His lessons are always interesting and never dull. I can't recommend him highly enough.

I recently came back to playing the Cornet after a 40 year gap and without a doubt, had I had Hugh as a teacher back when I was a teenager, I would not have got stuck on grade 5. His insight and teaching of technique has allowed me to break through several glass ceilings, and I truly believe that achieving grade 8 is now possible.

Hugh has been quite simply the best music teacher that I have ever had, and that is a from a middle aged student who has tried numerous instruments and teachers. My 9 year old son has been learning trumpet for 6 months now.. He is enjoying his lessons. My son said he is very good and encourages him to play even thougsh knows he has made a mistake. Hugh is friendly and attentive,. He engages us on a personal level. I am sure Huge and my son will get to know each other more and develop a great teacher and child relationship.

Our 10 year old son has been having trombone lessons with Hugh for the last few months and we have noticed his technique has improved significantly; he also has a much better overall understanding of music. Hugh’s lessons are both structured and adaptable, tailored to our son’s needs and preferences. Hugh is clearly very passionate about music and takes a genuine interest in his student’s growth. I started trumpets lessons with Hugh 3 months ago. I played the violin for a long time when young but now at 50 I wanted to try a brass instrument and have lots of fun! Hugh has introduced me to the trumpet very patiently, encouraging me every step of the way, adapting to my needs and ways of learning. He is an absolute expert in music and in the instrument and his love of teaching is also evident. I’ve enjoyed every single lesson and am keen to get better and practice in between lessons as my ‘time for me’ despite juggling work, children, house etc. I highly recommend Hugh as a fantastic teacher.

At 71 years old and not played since I was 18 I restarted tenor horn in the village band just over a year ago. That has gone well but I realised I needed to do something to improve on where I had left off. All those years ago ( I was never great by the way). A touch sceptical I approached getting lessons on line and came across Hugh. The best move I have ever made. 😁 Not only am I improving technique week by week, but I am beginning to understand the instrument better. Hugh’s overall deep knowledge about all things brass along with his ability to get things across has changed my attitude from ‘just wanting to improve’ to “wanting to be the best that I can be. Every lesson is a joy - even when I haven’t practised🥹 I could not recommend Hugh more.

My boyfriend surprised me at Xmas with a cornet and some lessons from Hugh. I played as a teenager and wanted to get back into it. Hugh has been fantastic, his priority is making sure I’m enjoying playing (which I do)!! He’s like a music scientist, with such a skill for explaining things in a way you can understand and if I’m finding a learning style doesn’t work for me he will adapt his style. I’ve made so much progress on both the playing and the theory which is setting me up to play more complex pieces. I honestly believe these lessons are going to be the foundation to my success of being a great corner player. Highly recommend Hugh!

Hugh has been an absolutely invaluable guide on my journey back to playing brass after many years away. I played to trumpet to a very competent level at school then had a 50yr break. I am well back into it but have a long way to go. I came to Hugh to get some live tutoring. He is a real discovery for me - excellent enthusiastic musician, passionate teacher and really responive to my aspirations while still beefing up my fundamentals. Breaks things down into simple components and leaves you feeling inspired after every lesson. A great guy!

Hugh is a fantastic teacher. He really helps you get the best out of your playing. He makes it fun. He is flexible (I am a busy more-than-full-time teacher!). He is so positive. I am learning the PBone rather than the trombone due to a hand and wrist injury and it is fantastic to have my lessons from the inventor of it. Just an all-round enthusiast in every way with loads of unique ideas to help one progress. Really can't recommend him highly enough. Brilliant in every way in his teaching.

Hugh has been working with my daughter (10 years old) to pass her grade one for trombone. So far I have noticed she plays more fluently and practices a lot more than she used to. Hugh is very organised and punctual. He logs all of the weekly homework on a spreadsheet and also records music pieces so she can use the recordings to practice, in which she uses often. Most of all Hugh is fun and very passionate about music and that really comes across when he is teaching. My daughter really likes his way of explaining.
