About Ylenia T.

I have been in love with music for as long as I can remember. I started off teaching myself piano and singing when I was 11 years old and eventually began playing double and electric bass in 2012.

I have been teaching bass one-to-one for the past few years and have loved every moment.

I enjoy connecting with students, finding out what inspires them, motivates them, and also learning to tackle the areas they find more challenging - from ear training, to sight reading, to improvising, to time keeping! I strongly believe that music is a discipline that benefits individuals on so many levels, and teaching it is a beautiful thing.

My music education has been very diverse... I have learnt a lot from a huge variety of musicians (Michael Janisch, Gary Crosby, Steve Watts, Vidal Montgomery, Daniel Casimir, Alexander Davis, Byron Wallen, Larry Bartley, Wayne Francis, Rubén Ramos Medina, Gene Calderazzo, Barak Schmool... to name a few!) in both formal and informal settings.

I have been gigging professionally as a jazz bassist in London and the UK in general for the past 4 years or so - I also play salsa, country, some reggae and some hip-hop.

About my teaching
I strive to adapt my lessons to each individual student's personality, aspirations, musical background and general lifestyle. Every individual is unique and responds to different methods and approaches, and to different stimuli.
My lessons support students in acquiring technique, language and develop creativity and the ability to pick things up by ear and improvise. I encourage pupils to self-critique, to develop strategies, exercises and practice routines.
In general I place a lot of emphasis on inspiration, on ear-training, on visualisation, and I try to make theory interesting and relevant and not too dense.
No age restrictions and no prior knowledge of music theory required.

I have taught ADHD students, I have taught young teenagers as well as mature students (40+).

Testimonial from a current student:
"Nia is an excellent teacher, I have learnt more in 1 year with Nia, then in 4 years of piano lessons when I was a kid. I wish I had a teacher like her back then... With Nia, you will learn the basics to understand how music works. She knows how to make a lesson fun, to motiv...
