About Tristan C.
Described by his students as friendly, understanding and encouraging, Tristan has seen many of his students make great strides in their playing, and thoroughly enjoys the vocation of teaching.
Tristan has a wealth of experience as both a teacher and a professional musician. A recent music graduate from Bristol’s DBS University, Tristan has been steadily building a reputation as a hard-working and versatile musician. Gigging regularly around the city, Tristan plays in a number of busy projects including a jazz duo (Marble Stair), a funk originals band (Locomoss), and as a sideman in Bristol’s vibrant jazz scene.
In addition to a degree in music, Tristan holds a distinction in Grade 8 Electric Guitar from the RSL board, and a distinction in grade 5 music theory from ABRSM.
Guitar Teaching
Tristan teaches guitarists of all abilities and ages, on both acoustic and electric guitar. Guitar lessons are tailored to each individual student, allowing space for students to explore their own musical interests.
Lessons are typically structured around learning a song that the student chooses, with technical exercises and music theory concepts applied in context.
Tristan has a genuine passion for music and thoroughly enjoys teaching a wide array of styles, some of which include:
- Pop
- Rock
- Blues
- Funk
- Jazz
- Neo Soul/RnB
- Folk (fingerpicking/right hand technique)
Music Theory
Tristan teaches music theory in a fun and digestible way. Students who study with Tristan will develop a foundational understanding of rhythm, harmony and melody, and will be able to apply this knowledge to better understand the music that inspires them. Tristan can also help students to pass their ABRSM music theory test up to grade 5. Areas of Tristan’s expertise include:
Song form and structure in Pop, Rock, Blues and Jazz
Jazz Harmony, understanding common chord progressions, substitutions and more
Ear Training, learning solos by ear, identifying intervals and chord progressions by ear
Reading and writing music in standard notation
Reading guitar tablature
Teaching Experience
Having taught over 30 students, Tristan has lots of experience as a private music teacher, teaching both online and from his home in central Bristol, UK.
Tristan has experience teaching young children how to play the guitar, as well as students of all other ages.
First Lesson
In the first lesson the student will be encouraged to discuss their musical interests in addition to their long term goals on their instrument. After an informal chat about the student’s musical preferences, Tristan will move on to looking at some fundamental techniques and exercises to get a gauge of the student’s current ability, again this is an informal procedure, not a test. Students will always receive guidance for what to practice, right from the first lesson.
