About Tom
Tom is a qualified teacher, professional pianist, trumpet player, currently based partly in Cardiff (where he is studying for his MA) and in Leeds, and a proficient performer of a huge range of styles. Tom is an experienced, flexible and enthusiastic teacher of piano/keyboard, brass and classroom music. He feels inspired by music through teaching and emphasises music-making should be as fun as it is challenging! Tom has a flexible approach and believes in personalising lessons to suit individual’s needs and preferences.
Tom is a qualified classroom music teacher (PGCE with Distinction from Liverpool Hope). Tom gained a MusB at the University of Manchester and then worked for 3 years at a SEND school as a Teaching Assistant and delivered ‘Sensory Music in Therapy’ sessions, whilst also teaching peripatetic music since 2016. He then trained as a teacher and has spent 3 years as a classroom music teacher in mainstream environments, alongside being a regular performer on the North West/Yorkshire music scene, as well as running a grassroots jazz night in South Manchester. He is currently honing his performance skills studying an MA in Piano.
Tom grew up studying trumpet, piano and singing at Junior RWCMD, and was involved at Welsh National level as a composer and jazz musician. Always having a zeal for teaching, he began tutoring younger students in GCSE/AS Level whilst still at school.
Teaching
Tom offers piano/keyboard and trumpet lessons, and has taught complete beginners (adults and children as young as 7), up to advanced jazz and classical performers lessons, so is happy to teach any age or ability! He has a solid belief in both getting the fundamentals and techniques right at the start, and balancing this with a sense of enjoyment and fun. Through his experience working with students with profound autism and learning difficulties, Tom has gained invaluable experience, perspective and patience in his teaching practice, employing up-to-date SEND-friendly strategies with SEND students.
Tom is always enthusiastic and full of encouragement for students. A typical lesson will involve a physical warm-up, involving getting the muscles of the hands and arms energised, getting you in the right frame of mind to play. This will be followed by any technical exercises, scales or similar if these are studied. Tom also believes in taking short breaks to refocus, and concentrates on pieces/improvising (if studi...
