Genres and styles

With Toby you can choose to learn piano music from a broad range of styles, such as classical, jazz, blues, rock, contemporary, pop, folk and singer-songwriter styles.

Skills

You will develop a strong skills set according to your chosen genre, such as playing by ear, memorising chords/scales, reading notation/chord charts, playing in time, memorising songs/pieces, working on your touch/technique, composing/writing songs, theory and improvisation!

Lesson Structure

It is important to know your expectations, whether you want to follow your own direction in your musical journey, or follow the Grade Exam system. Toby will help you to assess your level, set appropriate long-term goals, and then he will structure your lessons to maximise your progress.

Toby is a friendly and encouraging teacher, with over ten years professional experience both teaching and performing on piano.

Having graduated with a First Class degree from Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (specialising in Jazz), Toby has gone on to compose and tour his own music, as well as coaching the jazz pianists of tomorrow in secondary schools and at University level.
