Tobias Sonrisa Stürmer is an Oxford based, multi instrumentalist with 30 years experience of playing professionally, with a background in Cuba and West African Percussion and Drum Kit. He holds a Jazz Diploma from Mannes College of Music, New York and a Masters in Ethnomusicology from SOAS, London University. Tobias also plays guitar and bass, he is a composer and arranger as well as an experimental sound artist.
His lessons are tuned in with his students' particular aspirations and curiosities. Tobias is a rhythm section expert and does not only know about the different instruments but also how they work together successfully. He is particularly interested in intermediate to advanced students who wish to explore their instrument and rhythmical understanding creatively. He has lived in West Africa and Latin America and is familiar with their cultural contexts and how these traditions are connected in their communities to dance and song.
