About Theo L.
I graduated from BIMM Bristol with a BA (Hons) 2.1 in Professional Musicianship. I then went on to achieve an MA (1st) in Popular Music Practice at BIMM Bristol. I am a guitarist, but am skilled in music theory, sight reading, arranging, bass guitar, production and composition. My influences include metal, rock, blues, prog, jazz, soul, hip hop, and ambient music. Working primarily as a performer and composer, I have been involved in a number of projects as a musician for hire as well as my own projects. I have been teaching for 6 years, and have assisted lecturers teaching classes, and teach guitar and music production in secondary schools.
I mainly teach online, but can give in-person lessons to students in the Bristol area. I have a dedicated studio room in a nice smoke-free home so I can give lessons there as well.
My journey begins with the student's aims — whether they want to learn to improvise jazz, learn their favourite songs, have a broad understanding of music theory and arranging, or focus on songwriting. I will always listen to students' aims and help them to realise them. Then I will determine their preferred learning style, both at the outset and on an ongoing basis. I create a program of learning in collaboration with the student, in a transparent way, so that they are an active participant in their own learning. I like to teach in a relaxed way and will always tailor it to the needs of the student. I can teach Rockschool and Trinity grades, and have a knowledge of their curriculum.
