About Stephen Jackson Banks

CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE - FULLY BOOKED.
I’m a piano teacher and music composition PhD student based in Childwall, Liverpool. I can teach at locations within a few miles (lessons not currently available at my location). I have taught numerous students successfully on and off the ABRSM and Trinity syllabuses. Along with taking my PhD, I recently worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Liverpool, teaching seminars on three modules: Foundations in Tonal Harmony (MUSI181), Theory in Practice: Exploring Music’s Construction (MUSI180), and Composition for Digital Games (MUSI206).
I have been teaching piano for over 8 years. Across this time, I have worked with a wide range of students, teaching from beginner to grade 8 level in piano, and up to grade 5 with music theory (necessary for grade 6 piano and beyond). My teaching focuses on piano and theory, plus some elements of composition and improvisation.

In lessons, I prioritise a solid foundation of music theory and piano technique to enable independent learning and practice. My specialised teaching style emphasizes the "why" behind every concept, connecting ideas to ensure a comprehensive understanding. This provides a basis for enthusiastic students to quickly progress to high standards.
I teach a wide variety of different students, including those who want to pursue paths outside of any syllabus. Whether you are just starting or have experience already, I will assist with learning and progressing smoothly and comprehensively. Despite the thorough approach, I retain a relaxed, low-pressure mood in lessons; This encourages students to retain their enjoyment and creativity around the subject, including those with special needs.
