About Sophie J.
Sophie has over 10 years private violin teaching experience. She also currently teaches violin for Kingston Music Service and has done so for over 5 years. Sophie has had the opportunity to work with so many inspiring musicians over her teaching career and her love of music started when being taught by Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra players.
Sophie has experience teaching a range of ages and abilities, ranging from children to adults and beginner to advanced level classical style violin. She also has experience of teaching both the ABRSM and Trinity graded exam syllabuses. She believes that the violin teaching should be catered towards the individual and that it is important to incorporate a solid grounding of technique, alongside making the lessons enjoyable and interesting. The pupil can take the lead on what they want to achieve and whether they wish to focus on exams or not. The violin is meant to be enjoyed after all! She is passionate about how music can contribute the overall well-being of the individual and how important it is in everyday life. Sophie believes music aids gaining great skills in problem solving, communication and creativity, to name a few.
In the first lesson, Sophie will get to know the goals and abilities of the pupil. If the pupil has never learnt violin before, Sophie will start by introducing the violin and learning some basic principles before the end of the lesson. The aim is to at least play a few notes and try out the violin! If the pupil has already had experience in playing the violin, Sophie would love them to play a recent piece they have been learning in order to see what level they are at and how Sophie can help with the next chapter in their musical journey.
Sophie provides online music theory lessons from grade 1 to grade 5 level using the ABRSM syllabus. The lessons will be adapted to the individual but follow both a theoretical and practical approach. There will be lots of opportunities for practice questions and Sophie will be able to mark exam papers so that preparation of exams is achieved.
