About Simon R.
Simon has been playing music professionally for about 15 years now, playing a wide variety of styles and genres over the years. Singing before he could talk, Simon started off his formative musical training as an 8 year old, learning Classical guitar under Geoff Pratley, finally achieving Grade 8 with the Trinity College London exam board.
At 16, Simon discovered the music of Nick Drake and the British Folk Revival of the 60s and developed a love for folk guitar styles, and by 18 he had found the banjo, and his life was changed forever! Clawhammer banjo and the Old Time traditional music of America and Traditional English folk music became the main focus of Simon's musical life. Whilst studying Music Technology and Popular Music at Huddersfield University , Simon learnt from folk music legend Pete Coe, and formed the band Maia, with whom he played at some of the most prestigious festivals and venues in the UK, such as Glastonbury, Cambridge Folk Festival, Cropredy and Isle Of Wight. Since then he has performed in more traditional bands, such as Redwood River Band, Moorlanders and Sugarwell Hill, and worked as a solo artist, recording several CDs both with these groups and solo.
