Hello! Welcome to my page.
I offer fun, informal, and tailored teaching methods in the comfort of my own home on The Chells Manor Stevenage, for adults and children aged 8+. I am also teaching sight singing for those already singing.
28+ years of teaching has introduced me to all sorts of unique people who need individual programs of learning. I’ve taught everything from classical to modern, jazz to contemporary, so you get to choose the path you wish to take, building up your own unique music repertoire. I work with written music, not by ear, but I do introduce you to improvisation and composition in my own style. Includes chord work and accompany work.
Theory is integrated gently to complement the actual playing, so it isn't something to be scared of. I create my own worksheets and puzzles to help theory be more accessible and less daunting. See photos for examples. I can teach theory to Grade 5 which is a prerequisite for Grade 6-8 piano exams.
I no longer place students in exams. I simply don't want the stress anymore!
Learning an instrument is great for confidence and mental health and it widens an appreciation for music of all kinds. I have never come across anyone who couldn't learn, but it is hard at first and it takes regular practice or results will not materialise. That is why I only teach those who really enjoy the challenge and are willing to put the time
I personally began my journey aged 7 after seeing Liberace on television. I achieved
Distinction in all the ABRSM exams, taking part in competition at Cambridge piano festivals, and played in regular student concerts. I wanted to be a concert pianist but unfortunately suffered severe performance fright! So I understand how that feels and now can help others overcome it. I went on to study Humanities as an adult with The Open University which included Music, whilst raising my family. More importantly I have taught nearly all my adult life, and it is passing on the wonderful experience of playing the piano that I find most rewar...
