About Sarah
What can you as a student expect from lessons with me?
You can expect me to be genuinely focused on achieving the results you seek. Lessons with me are a dialogue, and pupils are encouraged to ask questions, share reactions, preferences, perceived difficulties etc so that we can always work as a team to develop and improve your playing.
I am a career teacher of violin who has spent more than 30 years teaching pupils, from age 4 to retired adults, in many different settings. During this time I have devoted myself on a full time basis to understanding violin playing better and to developing ways of helping students effectively and efficiently.
Whilst I love all styles of violin music, my specialism is very much in Western classical music.
To get the most out of lessons with me, you need to practise on a daily basis, or be prepared to work with me to develop a daily practice habit. You will require a suitably sized and correctly set up instrument (please wait for my advice if you do not currently have an instrument).
A routine weekly lesson is the best way to maintain motivation and keep you on track, so this is what I would recommend, but I am happy to fit in with your preferences.
My qualifications:
BMus (Hons) in Music (Manchester Uni); MMus in Performance (Beethoven Violin Sonatas) (Sheffield Uni); LRAM; Certificate of Advanced Study (Royal Academy of Music); PGCE in Secondary Music (Plymouth Uni).
What does the first lesson with a new student look like?
In the case of beginners, we will begin by establishing an effective playing position and learning basic care of the instrument, string names, names of the various parts of the instrument and bow, before moving on to short exercises for the bow.
If you have already begun your violin journey, I will be interested to know of your experiences so far, your preferences - and your frustrations, so that I can help with those! I can then suggest exercises, studies and repertoire which will take your playing forward. Bring as much material as possible which you have previously used - books, studies, sheets of paper etc.
If you would like to discuss the possibility of learning with me, I would be delighted to hear from you - please send a message via the button on this profile.
