About Samuel B.

Samuel is a highly sought-after music tutor based in and around Kent. He trained at the Royal Academy of Music, where he was the Mendelssohn Scholar and Manson fellow, and has enjoyed a wonderfully rewarding teaching career for over 10 years. He is a friendly, dynamic, motivated and effective teacher who is able to enthuse and inspire students with a love of music.

From complete beginners to advanced level students, Samuel has spent many years developing fun and effective teaching methods to suit everybody. He works with a wide range of people, from young children to adults. His open-minded and patient approach is always tailored to the individual needs and interests of his students, backed up by a strong theoretical and historical appreciation of the subject. He teaches in many styles, from classical to jazz to rock and pop.

As well as achieving great results in their performance exams, Samuel's students often enjoy exploring composition and improvisation. Some have already written accomplished songs and can improvise in a variety of styles.

If you are keen to take graded exams, Samuel will be an excellent guide and mentor. He is familiar with ABRSM and Trinity syllabuses and his students have a 100 percent pass rate, with most of them achieving merits and distinctions. Many have gone on to gain music scholarships at high-ranking independent schools, enter music competitions and attend Saturday morning music schools. Samuel is also familiar with most GCSE and A Level Music syllabuses and supported numerous students in gaining these qualifications.

If grades are not for you, Samuel will develop a unique approach with you (or your child) to cover all the necessary creative and technical points and, above all, nurture musical passion and excellence.

When teaching young people, Samuel likes to involve parents in the learning process so that the hard work and achievements made in the lessons can be continued at home. When teaching adults, Samuel is aware of the balance between a professional life and musical interests and can help to devise practise strategies to fit around busy schedules.

Samuel has taught at Junior Trinity and worked on numerous education projects with UK orchestras/musical charities. He has experience in teaching children with specific needs and regularly works with Music of Life and the Amber Trust.

When not teaching, Samuel continues his work as an award-winning professional composer. Current projects include a new animated opera film. He was Scottish Opera’s Composer-in-Residence between 2017-2020 where he composed a variety of work including numerous scenes for Opera Highlights tours; Grace Notes with novelist Bernard MacLaverty; Le trésor des humbles for soprano and orchestra, premiered at Aberdeen’s Music Hall; The Narcissistic Fish, a new opera film; Hermia’s Nightmare, based on A Midsummer Night’s Dream; and a new satirical musical Trumped! He studied at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and Royal Academy of Music, where he held the Mendelssohn Scholarship and graduated with a Bmus (Hons) and MMus degree. He was mentored by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies for nine years. His broad output has also included a chamber opera, Amerika, performed at the Tête à Tête opera festival in London, and a choral anthem, The Great Silence, premiered at the Windsor Festival for the Queen’s 90th Birthday. His music theatre piece Belongings was premiered on the Caledonian Sleeper between Aberdeen and London. He has also composed four Live Music Sculptures, site-specific compositions for London landmarks, including Tower Bridge, the Monument and St Paul’s Cathedral, and co-produced Planets 2018, a new ‘Planets Suite’ performed inside planetariums across the UK. He was awarded an ARAM in 2018.

Sam is an outstanding piano teacher, having coached our 3 boys for many years through the ABRSM grades. He has also been teaching them advanced university level composition and jazz piano, underscoring his ability to teach a wide range of topics and styles from entry to elite level. With his wonderful personality, strong values, obvious intelligence and great sense of humour, Sam has been an incredible role model to our boys. I can't speak highly enough of Sam and recommend him very highly.

Sam is an outstanding teacher. His passion for music infuses lessons which has ignited my daughters' enthusiasm for music. An incredibly talented musician as well as a teacher and truly inspiring to be around. He does have high expectations, but if you are ready to rise to these you will surprise yourself at what can be achieved. However, he is always encouraging, supportive and patient and both my daughters have made astonishing progress and love lessons. What more could I want?
