About Sam
Sam is a friendly, constructive and highly qualified music teacher with a first class degree in Music from the University of Bristol. He has a broad and exciting range of trombone experience, from playing in county-level orchestras to playing with funk ensembles in some of Europe's top night-clubs. This range of experience, combined with a strong academic background from a top UK University, means Sam is able to tailor his lessons based on the student's requirements, experience and passions.
Trombone Lessons
Sam's primary instrument is the Trombone, with a specialist focus on jazz trombone playing. Whether you're a complete beginner looking to blow your first note, or an experience player hoping to get into the intricacies of jazz improvisation, Sam will be able to teach and guide you through these.
During your trombone lessons with Sam, you will be working on:
- Principles of brass playing, including tone, range and breathing
- Learning pieces both by ear or through sheet music
- Musicality, including phrasing and dynamics
- Studying different genres and how to adapt your playing to suit
- Performance etiquette in different contexts
- Researching other brass players for inspiration and ideas
Music Theory Lessons
Throughout his Music degree, Sam focused on music theory and is able to understand the inner workings of music across a broad range of genres. A key principle of Sam’s lessons will be ensuring that the student fully understands the theory they are learning, by putting it in context and linking it to music that the student enjoys.
During your music theory lessons with Sam, you will be working on:
- Harmony, melody and rhythm
- Reading sheet music, including different clefs
- Diving deeper into genres that the student chooses, from classical to jazz
- Working towards ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory if the student chooses
Composition Lessons
Sam has gained a wide array of compositional skills through University and ensemble work. As the conductor of Bristol University Jazz Orchestra, Sam had responsibility for arranging music for the band and was able to gain insight into the compositional techniques behind jazz, funk, pop and soul.
