About Ruth
Whether you are a complete beginner, preparing for ABRSM or Trinity exams, returning to the piano after many years, or looking to develop your musicianship further, I offer personalised lessons tailored to your goals and interests.
What does the first lesson look like?
The first lesson is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and establish a clear learning plan. We will discuss your musical interests, previous experience (if any), and what you would like to achieve. For beginners, we will start developing good technique, including note-reading and listening skills. For more experienced pianists, I will assess current strengths and identify areas for development before creating a structured programme of study.
Lessons take place in my piano studio in Croydon.
My teaching experience
I have over six years of teaching experience and currently teach Music at a leading independent school in Surrey. I work with students aged 11–18 daily and have extensive experience supporting musicians of varying abilities, from complete beginners to advanced performers.
I teach children, teenagers and adults, and can help with:
Piano lessons
ABRSM and Trinity examinations
Music theory tuition
GCSE and A-Level Music support
Performance preparation and confidence-building
Sight-reading, aural skills and musicianship
My teaching style combines clear structure with encouragement and flexibility, helping students build strong foundations while developing a genuine enjoyment of music.
Professional background
I hold a Master of Music in Piano Performance from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where I studied as a scholarship recipient, and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Manchester.
Alongside teaching, I work as a professional accompanist and regularly perform in concerts, competitions and examinations. I am also involved in directing school ensembles and choirs, organising concerts and supporting young musicians in their artistic development.
My experience as both a performer and educator allows me to guide students not only in playing the notes accurately, but also in developing musical expression, confidence and artistry.
Whether your goal is to pass exams, perform confidently, study music academically, or simply enjoy playing for pleasure, I would be delighted to help you on your musical journey.
