About Russell
Russell is Artistic Director of Hull Urban Opera and has spent more than thirty years teaching students high-quality musicianship. If you want to play with taste and authority, he has a plan of action for you.
Russell has a proven track record in helping students of all ages meet their goals using a a system of progressive targets and friendly encouragement. He has unlocked the potential of many students who felt that they were ‘stuck’ in their progress and has seen their playing blossom.
FIRST LESSON
It's important that we work well together so a first lesson is just £16.45 for 30 minutes. To begin, Russell will ask you to play anything you currently know, or, if you are beginner, he will work through some exercises with you. Then we’ll experiment with musical games to understand where the strengths in your musicality lie. It’s also useful to know what music you imagine yourself playing once you are proficient - this might be in any genre. From there, we’ll devise a short and longer-term progress plan for your practice.
PRACTICE
It’s important to remember that real progress comes from your practicing and you must be prepared to set aside time each week for this. You can expect to see significant results with consistent practice and one 40-minute lesson per week.
REQUIREMENTS
It isn’t necessary to have an expensive instrument at home. Most students practice on an electric keyboard but do try to ensure that your instrument is touch sensitive and has a sustain pedal.
ABRSM EXAMS
Though not every student chooses to follow an examined course, the ABRSM system is effective at allowing students to feel their progress. Grades range from 1 - 8 and the collections of piano pieces are a convenient way to find appropriate works for all levels of accomplishment. Russell is also keen to hear about your particular interests so that we can incorporate your favourite music, be it rock, pop, film music etc, into your lesson plan.
It may not be necessary to take exams at all grades - many students skip a level if Russell feels that they have made sufficient progress.
COMPOSITION & THEORY
Russell is an experienced composer and arranger and can help you to develop your musical ideas into satisfying and nuanced compositions. If you require coaching in GC...
