About Robert

I'm a drummer, pianist and composer who graduated from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in 2018 with a degree in Jazz music. While studying, I received coaching from musicians such as Jeff Williams, Clark Tracey, Andrew Bain, Mike Williams, Percy Pursglove and Hans Koller, as well as attending masterclasses given by Steve Coleman, Jeff Ballard, John Riley and Dave Liebman, to name a few. I also travelled to Berlin for tuition from a drummer called Christian Lillinger. I've performed at venues such as Symphony Hall Birmingham, Huntingdon Hall Worcester, Eastside Jazz Club, The Hexagon Theatre, Upton, Cheltenham and Trondheim Jazz Festivals and many more. I performed for Prince Edward in the Eastside Jazz Club during his tour of the Conservatoire.

I began learning to drum at age 7, and gradually expanded my skills to include piano alongside, receiving piano lessons from Ian King at 15 and starting my drum lessons at 7 with Martin Emeny, and later Pedro Brown. Composition was something that I dabbled in during college and then dove into during my studies at the Conservatoire. At age 11 I received the Rockschool Award. I joined the Worcester Symphony Orchestra at age 18 playing the Timpani, and also played for the Worcestershire Youth Jazz Orchestra, with whom I performed all over the country and abroad in Germany, Holland and Belgium. I've had experience in teaching during my time as the senior drummer in WYJO, and coaching the drummers in the junior big band WYJO2. I also had a brief period before studying in Birmingham where I taught drums and theory privately.
