About Rob S.

Rob has a structured and methodical approach to helping you develop as a guitarist. He is keen to improve the technical and musical aspects of your playing whilst also focusing on real music and songs. He takes pride in helping develop guitarists to a point where they have a range of abilities, good quality of play and a clear understanding of how to improve themselves.
Rob is patient and friendly and can help remove the frustration some players feel by approaching things in a logical way. Any feedback will always be constructive, explained and coupled with strategies to improve. He will work at your pace, whether you are burning with enthusiasm and eager to practice loads, or just wanting a casual hobby to fit into your busy life.
Rob has played guitar for 30 years and taught for 15, including private and school work. He has a BA(Hons) degree in Popular Music and plenty of live experience as a solo wedding guitarist, and in function bands, a jazz duo, original rock/indie bands and as a singer-songwriter.

Teaching
Rob teaches guitar (acoustic or electric) to all ages and standards.
For beginners he has a structured and progressive approach designed to systematically introduce new skills and ideas, develop them in a musical context and use them as a foundation for the next chapter. You will always be challenged but in a realistic and achievable way. As well as the ‘quantitative’ (new songs/techniques etc) Rob puts a big focus on the ‘qualitative’ aspects which are easy to overlook by eager new guitarists. Things like quality of sound, listening skills, good sense of timing. This also involves working towards efficient technique –something that takes a bit more time in the short term but leads to guitarists playing with much greater ease, avoiding building in habits that will hinder in the future.
Rob is also very experienced at helping ‘struggling’ guitarists. Guitarists that have played for some time, perhaps self-taught and frustrated they are not seeing the progress they deserve for the effort expended. Rob is very adept at diagnosing problems and spotting the reasons behind, whether they be technical, musical or psychological.
Rob can help you pursue your goal to advance yourself as a guitarist, whether this be simply playing basic songs well, becoming a searing-hot lead guitarist, learning theory, fingerstyle or anything else you want to progress.
