About Philip D

Phil Dawson is an eclectic professional guitar player, music writer and teacher who has recorded and toured internationally. Phil has taught at all levels of music education up to BA and has also coached and mentored students who have gone on to successful music careers. He holds a PGCert from the University of Sussex.

Teaching in Guitar
Phil teaches guitar, electric bass, keyboards and music technology to all ages from 7 upwards.

Classical guitar: Phil chooses interesting, melodic repertoire that the student will enjoy playing. He can include both familiar classics and interesting new pieces as well as a solid foundation in tone production, hand positions, technique and musical expression. Phil can enter students for ABRSM exams if they wish.

Rock, funk, blues guitar: Phil aims to make lessons an enjoyable mix of getting the fundamentals of tone, timing and note production right, with work on interesting tune repertoire both classic and modern for each genre, improvising, chord knowledge etc. Both acoustic (steel string) and electric. He can enter students for Trinity Rock School exams if they wish.

Jazz guitar: Phil has a proven method for improving the student's playing whatever level you are at, and has extensive knowledge and experience playing in styles inspired by players from Django Reinhardt to Wes Montgomery to John Scofield to Kurt Rosenwinkel etc.

Bass guitar: Phil focuses on technique and tone production as well as interesting bass repertoire inspired by some of the greatest players of the instrument. Phil helps the student gain the proper feel and sound for each genre – to enable them to become a solid, dependable and inspiring player!

Music technology: Phil teaches all aspects of music production from basics of programming to mixing, primarily using Logic. He specialises in writing and producing music featuring live performances rather than electronic music, but has produced and released EDM tunes as well as written a course on chordal harmony for electronic music, so he has the knowledge to help many achieve their aims in these styles as well.

Piano and keyboards: Phil teaches pop and jazz harmony, repertoire, chords and technique mainly using a real piano. Phil doesn't teach classical piano.

Classical, jazz, blues, rock, funk, soul, r’n’b, hip hop, house, African, Brazilian, Latin.

First lesson
During the first lesson Phil will have a chat with the student to find out what their musical interests are, their experience and what they think they'd like to gain from music lessons. We’ll do some playing and listening and make a plan of how to go forward from there; Phil will give some handout material and/or pieces/songs/charts with backing tracks where required, to take away for practice at home.

If you’re having instrumental tuition, bring your instrument if you can. We’ll dive straight into playing and get you up and running straight away. We’ll also chat a bit and find out what you know and enjoy musically, and I’ll pass you any exercises, backing tracks, links, pieces or tunes that you need to get started. If you’re studying music tech, bring your laptop!
