About Oliver
I am a South London based jazz pianist, drummer, singer-songwriter and composer.
I am currently studying at King’s College London, where I am the president of the jazz society, I have studied arranging, songwriting, and jazz piano with Jay Verma (Olivia Dean, Anatole Muster, Mackwood, Sam Ryder), and I am a member of Tomorrow’s Warriors, an organisation through which I have had the opportunity to learn from some of the greats of the UK Jazz scene such as Denys Baptiste, Ruben Fox and Sultan Stevenson.
As a band leader and songwriter, I have performed at prestigious London venues such as the Spice of Life in Soho and as a pianist I have performed at multiple venues and events including Pizza Express Live, the Vortex Jazz club, A Love Supreme, We Out Here and Cheltenham Jazz festivals, and the Royal Albert Hall.
I have 3 years of teaching experience, with students with a range of ages, and I teach from my home in South London
I believe that students learn faster, and enjoy lessons more, through learning music they enjoy listening to, leading to them being more likely to continue playing the instrument for longer. My teaching style encourages students to seek out music that they will actually enjoy playing, and uses these pieces to teach them the building blocks of music theory and piano technique.
For example, learning a pop song can be used to teach basic chord theory, melodic ear training, and can be extended to teach playing in different keys by teaching students how to change the key of the piece they are playing. This same song could be used to teach improvisation over chord changes, and by extension scales and piano technique.
I have 5 years' experience as a professional pianist and 3 years of teaching experience. I have an A level in music and I have completed two years of a bachelor's degree in music from King's College London.
My lessons are ideal for beginner to intermediate pianists of all ages and musicians who are looking to broaden their understanding of music and music theory, while learning to play music that will keep them excited to play the piano
