About Niki
Niki’s approach to teaching is always based around the student as an individual. No matter your background or experience, Niki’s teaching in composition, singing and theory will support you in achieving your full potential with over 6 years of teaching experience at all levels to help you do this. Based in Yorkshire, he teaches students from across the whole of the UK via virtual classroom as well as more local students in-person. Niki recently completed his PhD in composition at the University of Leeds and his music has been, and continues to be, performed all around the world. He is also a professional singer across the UK and has taught singing, composition and theory as a university lecturer as well as to school students and cathedral choristers.
Niki has been enthusiastic about music for most of his life, and enjoys sharing this enthusiasm with students, friends or anybody who is interested! With experience in both classroom and one-to-one contexts, Niki’s approach of basing all lessons around individual needs means that he has the experience of teaching singing, composition and theory to all ages and abilities – from first lesson beginners to experienced students who, perhaps, want to refresh their knowledge. Whatever your ability, it is important to Niki that each lesson is bespoke and caters for your needs and intentions.
Teaching in Composition
Composition can be thought of as being somewhat impossible to teach; but, owing to Niki’s philosophy of centring all of his lessons around each students’ needs, his lessons are relaxed and set up as a discussion around scores, historical context, technique and listening. Each lesson is tailored around the student and the music they are interested in composing – whether this is for music conservatoire/university applications, portfolio examinations or just for fun. Niki teaches students from all backgrounds and abilities! Lessons typically include:
- Discussions
- Looking through scores
- Technical exercises
- Historical contexts
- Lots of listening
Niki will advise you on your compositions whether they are fully notated, graphic scores, text scores or even just verbal ideas!
Teaching in Singing
