About Nick
Nick is a recent graduate from West Sussex whose teaching style aims to emphasise the fun and creativity of making music, and he hopes to pass on his interest and enthusiasm.
Nick's lessons are aimed at beginner to intermediate musicians. His main area of expertise is in jazz and pop music, but he also has classical training on both piano and clarinet. His teaching focusses on equipping students with the skills and knowledge to pursue music in any direction they choose, be it for exams, personal growth, or just fun.
For students with some previous experience, Nick will spend the first lesson assessing your current ability, discussing your specific aims with regards to improvement, and agreeing how best to go about making progress in those areas. These areas might include sight reading, identifying chord shapes, reading notes with ledger lines, breath control and alternate fingerings (for the clarinet), or even improvisation.
For students who are completely new to the instrument, Nick will start off by teaching the proper hand position, the first steps of reading sheet music (the basics of rhythm and pitch), and the C major scale. These fundamentals apply to both piano and clarinet. He generally uses John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course for younger piano students, although adults shouldn't be put off by the cartoon characters on the cover of the book; it's a useful tool for introducing new players to the instrument. Beginner clarinet students will also learn the correct embouchure breath control.
Nick's lessons can be taught in person, either at his home or the student's, or online over Zoom.
As a recent graduate of Creative Music Technology, Nick's teaching experience is mainly with people in the 11-18 age group, and to a beginner to intermediate level. This also means he's very familiar with what it's like to be a student, and will aim to make lessons as enjoyable and as un-stuffy as possible.
