About James Mck

James teaches piano, keyboard, composition and music theory from beginners to advanced and specialises in both classical and jazz/pop piano. He has more than 15 years' teaching experience in varied settings including schools, colleges, universities and from home. James teaches classical piano up to grade 8 and teaches the art of jazz/pop piano, exploring harmony, improvisation and creativity.

James holds a Bachelors Degree, PGCE and Masters Degree in Music & Composition and has a genuine passion for all things music. Regularly performing solo and with a varied selection of jazz duos, trios, pop bands and original projects, James has performed as a session player for Decca Records and has appeared live on TV. He is passionate about music education and has delivered music based workshops for disadvantaged community arts groups in and around the Manchester area, as well as offering private lessons. James is personable, friendly and patient and believes the learning of a musical instrument can return huge rewards. He inspiring confidence, discipline, creativity, social skills and, above all, a sense of achievement and lots of enjoyment!

Classical Piano
Beginners to advanced (grade 8). Teaching will be tailored to individual needs, wants and ambitions and might typically follow the ABRSM syllabus of graded examinations, however a more personal program of study can be decided upon should the student not wish to sit exams. Lessons will include music appreciation, ear training, technical exercise such as scales and arpeggios, learning of repertoire, music theory and creative approaches to practicing.

Jazz/Pop Piano
Beginners to advanced. Teaching will be tailored to the individual and will focus on the many styles and genres that are associated with jazz/pop piano; jazz, blues, latin, pop and gospel. Lessons will include music appreciation, ear training, exploration of chords and harmony, improvisation, creative arranging, music theory and lots of fun! If students would like to sit exams then James would typically follow the ABRSM jazz piano syllabus.

First lesson
A typical first lesson with James would always start with a friendly conversation about your piano playing history and experience.
