About Mimi
What students can expect from lessons
I focus on what the students goals are and work from there. Whether it's exam focused or just for fun. We work on building the basics and the foundation of music, so that they understand what they're learning on a deeper level. I have a calm demeanour and am open and understanding of the students needs. It's my priority to create a safe learning environment, where students feel comfortable to be themselves, make mistakes, and express themselves. I teach in a way that sticks, so if they'd like to learn something on their own in the future, they have the tools to do so. I specialise in classical music, contemporary music and rock/pop. I teach the ABRSM syllabus, Trinity and the Trinity Rock & Pop syllabus, and Rock School. For my guitar and bass students, I teach either the Trinity Rock & Pop syllabus, Rock School, or how to play by ear, and learn their favourite songs and read music. To get the most out of teaching I recommend one 1-hour lesson a week, with a practise diary, the amount of time per week depending on age.
What the first lesson will look like
We'll discuss the students musical interests and their goals. Whatever they'd like to do, I always combine different aspects of learning an instrument into the lesson. We will learn music theory, exercises for technique, scales and pieces. I teach in my home, online or I can travel to the students home if it's in close proximity to my area. I have a full studio setup in my house with instruments, amps, and recording equipment.
My experience as a teacher
I have been teaching privately and as a peripatetic music teacher for 10 years. I have had students as young as 4 years old, all the way up to adults. I teach from absolute beginner up to Grade 8 ABRSM. I also have experience as a performer, both in a classical setting and in a rock band. This is invaluable when the students come to do an exam, or need to play in front of others in any context. I can learn music by ear, and teach this skill to my students as well.
Exams
I have a 100% pass rate. It's my priority that my students feel confident going into exams. They are well-equipped and prepared for the exams, and they always do very well. I also have students who I have helped prepare for auditions and received music scholarships.
