About Max

Professional, in-demand pianist and teacher in Classical Piano, Jazz Piano and music theory. I recently graduated with a First-Class Degree in Music from the University of Manchester and have many years of experience teaching students of all age ranges and skill levels. I have a passion for sharing my musical knowledge with others and helping people express themselves through music. I teach jazz, classical, pop, and musical theatre, and I have extensive experience gigging and performing in these genres to an incredibly high standard (I have recently headlined Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club and Berlin Young Euro Classic Festival).

My aim is to guide you through the technical challenges and musical nuances needed to play the repertoire you love. I will provide fun and engaging lessons that inspire you to explore all the different elements, such as rhythm, harmony, and melody, that come together in music. I can also help you prepare for grade exams at any level if that is something you want to pursue. Most importantly, I want learning the piano to be fun!

What a typical lesson might include: 🎼

• Instrument technique 🎹
• Unpacking pieces and improving technique and musicality
• Scales and arpeggios work
• Improvisation: soloing and chord comping
• Rhythm work
• Sight-reading
• Jazz and classical music theory
• Pedal work for piano
• Posture improvement

Then, the student can play their favourite piece or one they have recently been learning, and we will work on it together, discussing elements such as dynamics, technique, finger placement, notation, practice tips, and more. The goal is for the student to leave excited and inspired to have more lessons and explore more piano music!

A typical first lesson for beginners

For beginners, we would not necessarily need to play through a piece beforehand; we usually start by discussing the fundamentals, such as rhythm and notes on the piano or clarinet, and work from there. The lesson will proceed at a pace you are comfortable with and, as always, will be enjoyab...
