About Max
Max is a professional guitarist with 12 years of experience based in Southampton. Achieving a degree in Music Performance and Production at Solent university, Max has spent his time learning the art of performing from a young age, in front of large crowds at various different venues around the UK, including famous venues such as the Joiners in Southampton.
The first lesson
The FREE first lesson will give Max a chance to get to know the student and their musical background, if any. From beginner to advanced levels, Max will adjust and cater to the student as needed, including playing style, genre preferences and overall experience. After an informal chat and discussing musical interests, Max will create a custom plan based around 10 topics to begin with. This can be adjusted to fit the students own pace and style of learning. The student will then be asked to play one or two pieces in their preferred style if possible, however if they are unsure or unable to play them, Max will demonstrate some songs or techniques that the student might like to learn. The main objective is that the student leaves with a good feeling about lessons going forward.
Being completely new to playing is nothing to be worried about!
There is always a certain level of anxiety that comes with learning a new skill, and that is no exception when it comes to learning an instrument from scratch. Max will not try to overwhelm you with information if you are a beginner, and will introduce an easy route to learning the basics. When it comes to the students instrument, it is important for them to feel good when playing, so Max will make sure the individual is sitting correctly, holding the pick comfortably and able to see what they are playing. If you are looking into purchasing a new guitar at any point, Max will happily give some good examples and guidance on this.
Teaching style
Max wants to make sure that a student leaves every lesson feeling like they have achieved something. There are some necessary skills that need to be integrated into most lessons, including but not limited to -
- A proper warm up (for longevity and pain free playing, guitarists need to stretch and do
some guitar themed exercises!)
- Learning to read music (tabs are great for beginners all the way through to advanced, but notation will be taught as well)
