About Matthew
I'm a professional musician, songwriter and recording engineer with more than a decade of experience in live and recorded music. I have a degree in classical performance and a background in cathedral choirs, but for most of my adult life I've been a commercial musician, playing trumpet, guitar and singing in various function bands, playing upwards of 150 events per year. I also offer songwriting and session recording to private clients. I'm a big funk and disco fan, and I also enjoy modern pop and indie music.
I have taught in both group sessions and one on one for several years. As a trumpet teacher I've done ABRSM grade preparation at every level. I have run song writing classes, music production courses using the Reaper DAW, and am experienced in commercial and music theatre vocal training. I am most comfortable teaching classical, jazz and commercial styles but fundamentally am able to usefully instruct in any genre.
I believe in a fun first approach to teaching. I am not prescriptive when it comes to ordered learning, and do my best to teach each student according to their own individual needs. Music is a wonderful thing and too often students are put off by too much theory, rote learning and boring studies. While such things of course have their place I believe it's better to allow students to find their own path and to assist them along that with my knowledge and skills.
