About Matthew
I started learning the trumpet at 8 years old. Since then, I have enjoyed playing in brass bands, marching bands, concert bands, big bands, funk bands, and pop bands - among others. I have performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, played with Steve Waterman and the Wiltshire Youth Jazz Orchestra, and even practised with the Royal Marines. I also have two years' experience as musical director of Exeter University Concert Band.
I am currently working on my PhD, which I do alongside playing in the Exeter University Jazz Orchestra (the university's auditioned jazz society), for which I was Musical Director 2021/22. I first joined the society back in 2014, and have performed with the orchestra's big, funk and small bands at local venues like the Monkey Suit, the Bootlegger, the Old Firehouse and at many black tie functions in hotels across the south west. Furthermore, I have since 2014 been hired to play professionally as part of the University's graduation ceremonial band, which I occasionally also direct. I have also been hired as a trumpeter in pit bands for musical productions at the Barnfield and Northcott theatres in Exeter, the Manor Pavilion Theatre in Sidmouth and the Pavilion Theatre in Exmouth.
I have studied under professional musicians and trumpeters Mike Daniels and Brian Moore. I am very happy to teach complete beginners, so don't worry if you have absolutely zero musical experience. Additionally, I may be able to lend students a spare trumpet (subject to availability).
My trumpet playing is one of my greatest passions and, I find, one of the most satisfying ways to express myself. I love to share this experience with others, and always aim for an open dialogue with my students about their aims and ambitions. I look forward to hearing from you!
