About Mathew B.
Mathew is a professional guitarist and music tutor with a wide range of teaching and performing experience spanning the past twenty years. He is an accomplished improviser with a BA (Hons) in Jazz from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. He plays and teaches guitar in a variety of styles and settings, ranging from Jazz and Blues to Rock and Metal.
Mathew's teaching style is flexible and adaptable to suit the specific needs and goals of individual students. Playing music should be fun, and so he believes that one of his most important responsibilities as a teacher is to inspire his students. Mathew takes a holistic approach, giving clear and valuable information that is relevant to each student's individual musical goals. Mathew will guide his students while they explore a range of practical and theoretical approaches to studying harmony and technique (with a specific focus on improvisation) to help them productively and enjoyably get the most of their performances, improvisations, and compositions.
Mathew specialises in Jazz and improvisation, all types of Metal (especially Extreme and Death Metal styles), as well as Rock and Blues.
Your first lesson will begin with an informal chat about your musical goals and tastes. Anyone can learn to play music, and with the right approach and level of dedication, playing the guitar can serve you as a fun hobby, and even a creative outlet to express yourself. Once Mathew has a sense of your level and what you would like to achieve, he will then begin to show you some theoretical approaches and exercises with a view to getting you to improvise creatively and productively. Depending on your knowledge, confidence, and skill-level, this could range from playing through your first chord progression, to creating and resolving tension whilst navigating functional harmony.
In addition to your guitar, ideally you will need a webcam setup and a pair of headphones. To get the most out of your lessons, you should take notes where needed, which Mathew will help you with. He will also provide you with diagrams, bespoke video examples, and other learning materials where appropriate.
