About Mary B
I care about a students ability to learn effectively and in a fun environment. Learning to play an instrument should be a joyful experience! A brilliant technical foundation is necessary for any player no matter what age and of what experience level, so it is core to me and my teaching that every students covers the basics well.
Each lesson will be tailored to the specific student's needs and wishes, whether they're a beginner, they've been learning for some time, or they are returning to the flute after a break.
For a beginner, a typical first lesson will be spent just learning how to make noise using the headjoint of the flute (it's mainly important at this stage just to be encouraging because learning a new skill like this can be tricky and take some time, everyone learns differently!). Then, if you're already learning flute, your first lesson with me will begin with getting to grips with where you are at in your learning, including your musicality and technique. Going on from this, I will tailor lessons to your strengths and weaknesses, working towards goals you want and we can set together. If you are returning to the flute after some time, your first lesson will look more like a conversation of what you want to learn, and just an exploration of beginning to play again. We can look at pieces that you enjoy listening to, and work on rebuilding the technical foundation of your playing.
If you are looking for lessons in contemporary music, I specialise in contemporary and extended techniques. As a flute and piccolo player myself, I enjoy exploring how the flute can be used in fun and interesting ways.
I studied at Royal Holloway University of London, receiving a First in my BA in Maths and Music in 2022. Then, I studied for my MMus in Music Performance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, learning with Fiona Kelly and Sameeta Gahir, receiving a Distinction in 2024.
