About Lindsay E.
Lindsay is a fun, enthusiastic woodwind tutor who passionately believes in the natural ability of all students to achieve their goals. She teaches saxophone, clarinet, flute, recorder and music theory, and has a student-led teaching style helping pupils explore their own learning path, whether that be exam focused or ear playing and improvisation.
Lindsay is a tutor who aims to instil confidence in pupils’ abilities and enable them to feel at ease. She teaches a wide variety of musical styles so that you can learn anything you wish – from solos of your favourite stars, to exploring modal jazz works, playing Beatles songs, deep diving into Jamaican rock-steady or Chicago blues, discovering classical music themes or if you love Disney then playing tunes from your favourite films!
A first lesson with Lindsay will be spent getting to know you and your musical interests and setting a clear plan of small achievable goals to enable you to progress in a short amount of time. Lessons can take place either at her studio or online or a mixture of the two. Many of her current pupils that learnt online during lock-down have remained digital as they have found the format engaging and convenient.
Lindsay’s online lessons aim to be an outstanding experience due to the research, time and technology she has invested in them. She has a multi-camera set up to aid demonstrations, uses a high fidelity microphone so you can hear a ‘true sound’ and has fibre broadband to ensure there are no interruptions to your lesson. She also uses a wide variety of apps both online and in person to assist learning in areas such as notation reading, aural awareness, sight-reading and even crafts specific pieces, exercises and backing tracks just for your personal progress.
If you are a beginner and attending your first ever lesson then fantastic – welcome to the world of music playing! There will be a lot of fun in the initial lesson - showing you how to assemble your instrument, make a sound and a few areas of general maintenance to keep it in good playing order. If you don’t have an instrument yet - no worries – Lindsay can discuss with you what your options are and direct you to the best instruments to hire/purchase.
Lindsay has over two decades of experience in teaching all ages and abilities. She specialises in beginners as she loves to set students on their musical path and encourages them to keep a ‘digital log ‘of their playing so they can monitor how far they have progressed.
Lindsay has also taught and prepared pupils for the highest-level grade 8 exams both in jazz and classical genres for the Trinity and ABRSM boards. She has experience with hosting the new digital performance exams for these boards alongside preparing students for university auditions. Lindsay also teaches music theory – particularly grade 5 theory (a prerequisite for higher practical grade exams) and A level music harmony work.
Lindsay teaches privately, for music services and in schools across Kent; both individually, in small groups and with whole class settings. She particularly enjoys directing and conducting ensembles and has directed junior orchestras, percussion ensembles, creative groups, clarinet choirs, as well as being sectional leader for county youth orchestra. One of the greatest things about music is to play and create with others.
Lindsay is classically trained on all of her instruments and has studied Balkan music with Dave Shulman (Royal Academy of Music) and jazz with Mick Foster (Guildhall, Trinity Laban) while at the University of Kent. She achieved a first class honours degree 1:1 in music – specialising in music technology, which allowed her to gain valuable insights and experience in music production alongside instrumental techniques.
Lindsay is a professional player with two decades of live experience and loves to play a wide variety of styles including ska, folk, rock, jazz, and blues, and is a creative and scintillating player. She has recorded on a number of albums for original artists and is currently regularly playing festivals and events with Brighton based ska band.
Lindsay is a dedicated teacher with music as her vocation and is passionate about communicating this to others. If you would like to lean more about taking lessons with Lindsay please send her a message.
