About Lewis
Lewis is an experienced musician and music educator. His approach is always to nurture students to develop their own interests and ideas. Regardless of ability or age, and whether in relation to an instrument, to production, or to music theory and appreciation in general, the focus is always on creative engagement and exploration.
All styles have something to teach us. This means an emphasis on technical practice and exposure to new musical ideas, but also making sure that music is seen ultimately as a form of expression and sociality. Lewis's style of teaching is playful and encouraging, but also presses more advanced students to develop a wide musical vocabulary and an appreciation of different traditions. He is able to teach grades on instruments, but often finds that their narrow focus stifles the organic development of students' interests.
10+ years of performance and production experience with some incredible artists and teachers (Lianne Carroll, Sam Wills, Dan Jefferies, Current 93, and others) has been invaluable in forming Lewis's sense of musical diversity, and the kinds of skills required to play music to a professional level. He currently plays drums in DJTRIO and writes and produces for Big Huge New Circle, soon to release their first album. As well as music tuition, he also teaches in the English Faculty at the University of Cambridge, where he is completing his PhD.
