About Leonard J. D.

Len is an enthusiastic, qualified and experienced music teacher offering lessons on the Piano, Theory, Aural, General Musicianship and exam accompaniment to all ages and abilities. He normally teaches privately at home in his own studio, but due to family vulnerability he is giving only online lessons at the moment until it is safe to do face to face as well. He uses Zoom as a platform, enhanced by additional webcams and microphones. He is based in Eastbourne.

Len has an L.G.S.M. piano teaching diploma and a Certificate of Education of the University of London Institute of Education which qualifies him as a teacher in schools. He trained as a teacher of piano at the Royal Academy of Music and then went on to the one-year course for professional musicians to train to teach at secondary level.

Len is a dedicated teacher of the piano and believes that music is for everyone and not just the few , and that especially during the kind of difficult period we have been experiencing it has a vital place as a healing agent and means of expression. He teaches all styles and aims to promote enjoyment and achievement.
He directs his lessons according to the skills and enthusiasms of each student, and enters students for exams where appropriate. He uses the ABRSM board with most students, offering both the Practical Exam and the new online Performance Exam, which has been very popular.

Len teaches Theory to all levels up to and including Grade 8. He believes that developing theoretical understanding promotes and assists the practical side of music, and can be enjoyable!

Previous Teaching Experience

Len started his musical career as a Head of Music/Music Specialist in several Secondary Schools.
As a schoolteacher he was responsible for delivering classroom music to the whole school, and also rehearsing and performing with various choirs, instrumental groups and musical productions, e.g. Oliver, Amahl and the Night Visitors, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe and Noye's Fludde.
After 27 years he decided to change course and teach privately.

Len is a member of the Incororated Society of musicians with FISM status.
He has a DBS Enhanced Certificate

Len offers lessons during the week, but not at weekends or during state school holidays.

Len is a brilliant piano teacher. Both my daughters love his lessons. He makes the teaching engaging and fun. Whilst teaching them to play the piano, Len also covers many areas of music theory and musicianship. I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Lessons with Len were a high point in the week for both my children. They enjoyed lessons with him, found him to be friendly and approachable, and also achieved excellent grades (many distinctions and merits).
