About Lachlan
Lachlan is an experienced violin/fiddle and viola teacher, with over 30 years of playing violin and 15 years of teaching. His speciality is in Scottish, Irish and Nordic folk music, but he also teaches other styles, including classical violin/viola. He has experience in working with students on ABRSM exams up to grade 8, and SQA qualifications up to Advanced Higher.
Lachlan also teaches music theory, including grade 5 ABRSM as needed for high level practical exams.
He teaches children and adults, from beginner to advanced. He loves teaching music and wants to help you be the best that you can, as well as having lots of fun. He believes that the best way for students to learn is to have work on what motivates them, to make the lessons enjoyable and fulfilling as well as ensuring students have solid foundations in technique and musical understanding.
An initial lesson would cover a student's musical background, skills, and knowledge, as well as their aspirations for learning. There would be a discussion about learning styles and preferences that help the student learn effectively. Lachlan has a small number of instruments available for loan, but students ideally will have - or soon acquire - their own instrument.
Lachlan teaches from his studio in Pollokshields, Glasgow, and is happy to teach online. He has a current PVG certificate and also have experience teaching neurodiverse students.
Lachlan has experience as a professional musician playing in traditional music bands and currently performs regularly with Point Five Ceilidh Band and The Jiggers Ceilidh Band. He teaches for the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland's Junior Conservatoire and has taught in several Scottish council music services and with Sistema Scotland. As well as instrumental and theory teaching, he has taught ensembles and workshops. Lachlan has a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Musicology from the Australian National University.
