About Kevin
My Background:
I studied Jazz guitar (Performance) at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland for 4 years and achieved a BA (hons) in 2019. I gained extensive knowledge of harmony, improvisation, rhythmic systems, teaching methods, theory, compositional and arranging techniques. I've received mentorship and masterclasses from world-renowned instrumentalists and educators which has informed my own teaching style. I gig regularly around Scotland playing my own and other people's music. My industry experience gives students an insight into stagecraft, recording and can be beneficial in supporting students in developing their confidence when performing. As well as focusing on my performance ability and my own personal growth, since I started teaching 6 years ago I have developed and improved upon my teaching style massively.
My teaching style:
The lessons I give are tailored to the students' needs and goals. For the students who are learning as a hobby I centre the lessons around enabling them to play all their favourite songs while giving them the tools to eventually be able to break down and learn songs on their own and for my students who have academic or performance-related goals I split their lessons into three parts. I start by assessing the student's progress on the previous learning and homework set through questioning and performance, next I tailor the lesson to suit the needs of the learner in achieving their goals. I end the lesson by setting homework that will reinforce the learning that has taken place.
All my students learn: how to improvise, figure songs out by ear, understand and apply music theory and how to compose/develop ideas.
If you are a total beginner and don't know where to start, I can help you to play your favourite songs. If you are already a professional musician I will help you break through plateaus, demystify modes and show you how to improvise/accompany on difficult chord changes and fast tempos.
