About Kenneth J. D.

Kenneth is a professional accordionist and composer, with a passion for teaching. He focuses on developing and nurturing the creative potential of students, supporting them to achieve their personal goals. As an artist, he has performed, written, recorded and collaborated for a variety of solo, musical and multi-disciplinary works. This includes theatre, performance art and gallery-based sound installations.

Kenneth is based in East Ayrshire, Scotland - and extends his teaching assistance virtually to the rest of the UK. Kenneth is passionate about sharing his love for accordion, and welcomes students from all abilities, from absolute beginners to advanced students. His teaching style is highly adaptable to suit the needs of learners, encompassing technique, games and musicality.

Kenneth was inspired to play accordion from his grandfather and has been playing for 20 years. He is a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (BMus Performance Hons).

Kenneth is friendly, attentive and patient, with an easy-going attitude to teaching. Whether pursuing music or learning casually, he encourages students to follow their musical curiosity and utilise their creative potential to the fullest. Lessons are fun, engaging and tailored to the individual’s learning needs. Lessons will usually focus on:

- Technique and healthy practice (ensuring good posture and good, ergonomic practice habits).
- Developing strong foundations in melody, harmony and rhythm.
- Applied music theory and aural skills (through listening sessions).
- Interpretation, helping students to find their own voice.
- Working with students’ personal interests, playing pieces that they are inspired by and resonate with.


Genres
Kenneth can cover almost all genres, but specialises in folk and classical.


First Lesson

An introduction will be made, followed by an informal chat, where Kenneth and the student can get the chance to know each other and discuss their learning goals, styles and musical interests. If you have an idea of what you would like to play, you are invited to demonstrate this to give Kenneth an idea of the music that you like and your current ability.
