About Katie Stevens

I'd like to help people find their own musical path through music that they enjoy playing! Music should be something pleasurable in all of our lives and for our instrument not to be something that we look at and feel pressure or guilt because of. I offer lessons in clarinet styles such balkan, klezmer, scandi and I offer Irish flute and whistle lessons. I also have experience of teaching clarinet from beginner to grade 8 and up to grade 5 in flute with the ABRSM (Royal Schools of Music exam board).
My biggest passion is listening to and playing traditional folk music and central to much of this music is social music making so I would like to help facilitate that for you if that is something you are interested in. That could be ear training, learning traditional tunes ‘on the fly’, basic improvising so that playing off the page is not scary, or learning to read to play in ensembles or bands. Any or all of the above!

What does a first lesson with me look like?

A first lesson with me will involve a chat so that we can get to know one another. I’d like to find out what it is you’d like to get out of our sessions, what has motivated you to take lessons and what kind of music you really love to listen to. If you’re a beginner we might put the instrument together and learn to make our first sounds. If you’ve been playing a while you might like to play me something so that I can get a feel for where you are at and make suggestions for what I’d recommend we work on. Before we finish we might like to work out a kind of structure for our ongoing lessons ie: we could spend the first 10 minutes of a lesson learning notation, music theory concepts or looking at some new techniques or ornaments, the next 10 minutes might involve some ear training and listening skills and the last 10 could might be a chance to mute yourself and play along with me! I’m open to suggestions but am also happy to lead the way if you’d like me to at this stage.
