About Katie
An adaptable, fun and engaging tutor, Katie is a passionate musician with extensive experience in both music, theory, performance, and teaching. Having studied music at the University of Manchester, she was classically and operatically trained. She also sang as one of the lead singers in the University's Jazz Orchestra, and enjoys a variety of musical styles from pop to jazz, to musical theatre, to classical, to folk, to wider genres such as Gamelan, Klezmer as well as various Latin American styles, and can teach whatever a student desires!
More currently, she is involved in two successful groups: an Indie-Folk girl band with whom she both sings and plays piano: they have recently joined The Waterboys on their UK, Ireland and European tour performing in venues such as The Barrowlands in Glasgow and The Paradiso in Amsterdam. The band have performed at festivals including Glastonbury, Cambridge Folk Festival, Greenman and All Points East. Katie is also a member of an 8-part acapella folk group who have recently recorded their third album; and have performed in both Scotland and Ireland on tours. As an active participant in the national music scene, she hopes to inspire the students she works with and allow them to understand the importance and benefits of music-making!
Teaching
Having worked in schools as a teaching assistant for the past 3 years, she is very experienced in working with students in both 1:1 and small group settings. She is a fun, patient, and adaptable teacher, and she is committed to engaging students in a subject that she has dedicated most of her life to.
Singing and Piano Lessons
Each lesson is tailored to suit the needs and wants of any individual student. Katie is a very versatile tutor teaching a large variety of genres and techniques for both piano and singing, whether it's jazz, classical, opera, musical theatre, folk, pop etc. or whether a student wants to work on improvisation, following chord sheets, stage presence, confidence, control, or performance and microphone techniques. She can also tutor students in composition and song-writing.
