About Kathy
Hello! My name is Kathy. I am an experienced violin and viola teacher of all ages and abilities. I aspire to enable my students to be independent musicians with an all round knowledge and understanding, whatever their level.
My lessons are structured and balanced between technique and repertoire, always mindful that pupils are there to learn as well as have fun. Exams are optional! I teach the traditional western violin and viola repertoire, of which there is so much that I am happy for pupils to have input into what they learn.
To get the most out of my lessons I would recommended that they are taken weekly (term-time only) for 30 minutes up to approximately grade 5 standard, when a longer lesson would be beneficial. Practice should ideally be daily, length depending on standard but starting at 10 minutes for beginners. Pupils will be expected to provide their own instrument, and to purchase music when requested (cost of this will be kept as low as possible)
I teach in my music room at home. I like pupils to provide a notebook where I will write what pupils are asked to practise each week, as well as tips and guidance on technique and how to practise.
The first lesson with a new teacher can be daunting. If you are a complete beginner, I will introduce you to your instrument and within no time we will be creating music together! If you already play, it would be helpful to have something you could play for me - no pressure, just to give me an idea of your standard and technique!
I have been teaching for over 30 years. I have worked in private schools, state schools, as well as my own private practice. I have taught all ages, from young children to adults, and all abilities. I am very experienced in coaching, both chamber groups and string sections of Youth orchestras. I currently run a Junior string group for a local authority.
To complement my teaching, I feel it is important to keep my playing standard high. I freelance in the area, regularly play in quartets for weddings, and I love nothing more than getting together with friends for a day playing string quartets, just for fun!
