About Katherine
With 20+ years experience, learning to play music is a wonderful journey and I feel proud to be part of that journey with you.
I'm really excited that you've decided to start learning a musical instrument. Music is so fun and rewarding. Some of my happiest memories have been made with friends I've made through playing music. Music teaches you so much - it's not just about achieving different grade exams, although I can help you with this. It teaches you emotion, structure, discipline - you even learn languages along the way.
My teaching style and approach:
My approach is versatile and adaptive whether you wish to study for graded exams, entry to institutions or other auditions, or whether you wish to study for your own pleasure or personal development.
I am guided by the learner and what they and their family (if relevant) feels is most appropriate at that time.
For beginner pupils, I do devote time and energy into learning to read music, as I find this can be a barrier for future progression if this is ignored.
I am friendly - my most important rule is that people enjoy music.
Who can I work with?
I am highly experienced working with all ages and abilities, and can bring energy to any context, for example a returning adult who wishes to rekindle their musical journey, advanced students who have a particular aim for their learning or younger students looking to make a start.
Beginners of any age are always made to feel welcome and supported, whatever their goals or previous musical experience might be.
About Me
I began playing the piano when I was about 4 years old - I'm from a musical family and my mum was my first teacher. I then also started learning cello with her from around the age of 6. My mum instilled a love of music for what it is from the very beginning, and forever grateful for that. We still get excited over the same sorts of things when we hear a particular piece on the radio, or a carol at Christmas.
I was also singing probably from the age I could talk - singing the same songs that were on the one tape we had in the car and driving both my parents up the wall! I joined our church choir as soon as I was old enough, and as well as the regular services, was fortunate to sing in a number of big opportunities, including performing Allegri's...
