About Katherine B.

ONLINE OR IN-PERSON WORCESTER ONLY Kath is a singer / pianist and a widely experienced band musician; primarily in vocals, but also on keyboard to accompany other soloists.

In London she sang with several function bands for corporate events and weddings. These
included the Royal Marines Function Band at the Officers’ Mess, Norton Barracks, and supporting Ray Mc Vay; Marti Caine; Tom O’ Connor and other popular artists at the Hilton, Park Lane W1. Music performed in clubs was mainly popular and contemporary; but sometimes, with a big band setting she sang arrangements of jazz standards.

She later toured Europe with a fascinating band called Ripzmag on some anti – drug trafficking gigs. The original material was best described as a fusion of rock, punk and musical theatre.

Kath has also appeared at a number of jazz festivals; at Teignmouth; Great Yarmouth; Brecon and
Malvern, with some excellent musicians.

She later sang for contracts overseas in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Bahrain. Six nights per week brought home the reality of what hard work performing can be! She met her husband, Daniel in Dubai and after the third contract, they decided to settle in Worcester UK, a return home for Kath.

Since settling back in the UK, she has increasingly committed herself to music education, with individuals, in groups and in workshops. Over the last 20 years she has become driven by the desire to see students develop and achieve their goals. Seeing students grow, in confidence and self esteem, while developing their awareness is deeply gratifying to her.

Kath holds the following qualifications:
A BA hons in Humanities with music specialism
A Certificate of Education and Training in the Lifelong Learning Sector; (a level 4 teaching
qualification)
CTABRSM, a teaching Certificate awarded by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of
Music.

Having taught with various examination boards, Kath has a liking for many genres of music and teaches graded practical exams that include baroque; classical; folk; romantic; musical theatre; twentieth century and contemporary genres. She particularly loves jazz and fusions of it with modern and contemporary styles.

Kath teaches singing, from beginner to advanced levels, grades 1-8, to all age groups, from 7 to 97! She also teaches Piano, beginners and grades 1 -5, and music theory, grades 1 -8. She offers teaching for the ABRSM, LCM, and RSL exam boards, and others on request! She can also coach you for auditions, or your own personal goals.

Kath’s teaching style is person-centred and tailored to individual needs.

First lesson
First lessons and subsequent ones always begin with a little chat. Kath will ask where the student thinks they are in their development. If there is any doubt, Kath can help determine that for them. Students are welcome to bring any pieces they have worked on already or are currently learning. Alternatively, Kath has plenty of resources that can be tailored to the student; these include using Youtube to support vocal students where there is no piano music.

Beginners
Kath has plenty of resources for beginners; there is a wealth of material for them to find their preferred learning approach from. Books that have already been chosen are welcomed too. Getting warmed up with something already known, from music or memory is always a good start, especially if you feel a bit nervous. Kath knows how that feels!

Our last review was really useful. We focused on what I had done, where it fell short of an achievable ideal and what could be done to rectify these shortcomings. Katherine as always was very tactful. We also shared a number of personal experiences in how we sought to reach our goals. It was very helpful to not feel alone, realising that the teacher; had at some time in the past; struggled with the same issues that are currently confronting the student. For me, a truly great teacher. I whole heartedly recommend Katherine to anybody who wants to improve. Geoff

Katherine is currently tutoring my eight year old daughter for singing using skype. She has a lovely approach to the lessons and really helps Zoë engage in a very organic way. Zoë loves the lessons and really takes to the guidance and encouragement offered by Katherine. I would have no hesitation in recommending Katherine to other parents!

Katherine was very kind and patient throughout the entirety out of the lessons and explained the topics very well, especially considering I'm a complete beginner. I never felt overwhelmed and the pacing of the lessons was absolutely perfect. I'd highly recommend her tutoring!
