About Kai Carter

Music is universal and the joy of music is for everyone. There is always an easy way to get into music whoever you are. Our first lesson will focus on getting to know your aims and any prior experience you may have, by the end of the session we will have a clear path forward with exercises, recommendations of learning resources and material to practice.

My Approach:
Lessons are always tailor made for the pupil and what you'd like to learn.

My teaching style is always friendly and optimistic. I like to include a mix of general music theory, good musicianship practices and practical techniques as a foundation but also some broader skills such as playing by ear, improvising and finding your own identity as a musician.

I believe in helping students with these initial skills but in the long run aim to help students gain confidence to learn independently.

Choosing Repertoire:
It's highly important to me that a student feels excited about what they are playing and have ownership over the repertoire they choose. This is the best way to keep engaged and feel inspired to keep practicing and enjoying music.

My Teaching Experience:
I have a degree in music performance and professional practice and have been teaching alongside my performing career for 10+ years. In that time have taught a wide range of styles from folk and jazz to rock and pop. I am comfortable with tablature, music theory and playing by ear. Lessons will be in a step by step fashion at the pupil's own pace and explained clearly with a sensitivity to each student's individual learning needs.

My Performance Experience:
I have been a full time musician since 2012 and in that time performed on stages across the world including Glastonbury festival, several visits to the States and many tours of Europe. I enjoy all music but particularly vintage music such as trad jazz, old time, country, blues and bluegrass and regularly play in bands performing these styles. I also perform as a guitarist in a number of ceilidh bands and am familiar with how to accompany Celtic folk tunes.

I play multiple instruments to a high level and am familiar with specific techniques for these instruments such as picking/strumming/plucking styles as well as stylistic features specific to a genre such a chord inversions and scale choices.
