About Juliana D
Juliana is a music teacher with over 7 years teaching experience. She holds a Bachelor's of Music from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, and an MA in Music Psychology from the University of Sheffield. She is passionate about community music-making, and has delivered projects for hospitals, care homes and early years settings. As a performer, she has played for theatre, TV and radio including the Royal Shakespeare Company, Manchester Collective, BBC Songs of Praise, adverts and the Yorkshire Silent Film Festival. She regularly plays in projects around the city and beyond.
Teaching
Juliana teaches recorders and whistles from beginners to advanced and piano up to grade 3. Her teaching approach consists of establishing the student's interests and goals, and tailoring the lesson around you, the student.
Genre
Juliana specialises in classical and folk music and is comfortable teaching both using music notation and by ear. However, she teaches and enjoys most genres of music including jazz, pop and rock.
First lesson
Juliana will generally start with a chat in order to get to know her students (and/or parents when teaching children), and establish their goals and interests. If the student has already begun learning, Juliana might ask them to bring a piece or two to play. A first lesson can feel a little nerve-wracking, so whether you're a complete beginner, or a little more advanced, it's all about making the student feel comfortable and confident.
Beginners
Sometimes, it is best to order a tutor book so that it arrives before your first lesson, but if it doesn’t arrive in time, Juliana will have some photocopies or resources to get your started. The only other things you should bring are your instrument, and a notebook which will allow your teacher to jot down what was talked about during the lesson and to refer to at home. If you don't have an instrument yet, in some circumstances Juliana may be able to lend you one for a short time and advise you on which instrument to buy.
